This fine novel by Mollie Evelyn Moore Davis is another nearly-forgotten gem. Published in 1907, the melodramatic, entertaining story is enhanced by its vivid depiction of contemporary Creole culture. Of particular interest is its comparison of the attitude towards "mixed" blood (a topic which is revisited by Sinclair Lewis in Kingsblood Royal) with that in France.
The text came from this scan, backed up by this scan. References to page numbers and illustrations were omitted, as were the illustrations themselves. While most of the original spelling was preserved, contractions such as "is n't" were joined. Otherwise, any obvious typographical errors were corrected.
So here it is: the master HTML version, the home-brew Kindle version, and the actual Amazon publication.
