Mary's Cafe

I ate here a few times in the 90s and early 00s, perhaps even as early as 1990. I went to Stockmans Club next door a couple of times when Hank from the old Monday Night Blues band at Charly's performed there with his own "Oh, we got both kinds: we got Country and Western" style band. The last time I ate at Mary's -- I'm pretty sure -- was in 2009 when my best friend Dave [R.I.P.] and I took a trip to go camping at Toroweap.

It's decent, competent, unpretentious, popular with the locals, and cash-only. It's also way off my beaten path unless I'm already heading that way out of town. The food is nothing to write home about, but neither am I complaining, because there's really nothing to complain about.

Further on the way out of town are two other venerable institutions: Horsemen Lodge and 2 Bar 3. I ate at the former once years ago, and it was great, but not a place I could consider an actual site of pilgrimage. Currently it's owned by the Northern Pines people, which bodes well, but I really have no desire to return. 2 Bar 3 holds a strange fascination for me, and was a favorite stop for the hang glider set, but given its health violation history I have yet to muster the courage to stop there.
