Galaxy Diner

My favorite here has always been the fried egg sandwich. My other favorite is the cable car sandwich: a pot roast melt with green chilis on sourdough. The patty melt is excellent, one of the best in town (second only to Bun Huggers). The Cuban sandwich is odd but tasty [my favorite Cuban sandwich was at the Birch Street Deli, which is now the location of Whyld Ass]. The philly steak is decent. The coleslaw is one of my favorites in town: made with just a touch of horseradish. I had a great turkey dinner here once. Steak & eggs is good. Excellent chick-fried steak. Other items can be hit-or-miss. Years ago they had a great hash-o-rama special, but it's long gone.

Recently, they changed the menu, dropping the cable car sandwich. However they did say that they could make it again for me if I wanted. The fried egg has also changed, and is now served on a croissant instead of sourdough: it's really crappy. However, at my most recent visit, I asked for it on wheat toast, and that's definitely the way to go.

This place was a JB's restaurant when I first moved to Flagstaff; the other old JB's location by Arrowhead Ave is now an auto parts store. The Galaxy Diner chain is still owned by JB's, and there used to be several of them, mostly in Utah. They're all gone now, and the one in Flagstaff is the last one left, so I don't really consider it a chain anymore.
